The Dream

Le Rȇve translated “The Dream” was one of the sought-after painting by billionaire and art collector Steve Wynn. This painting by Picasso was the centre-piece of his vast art collection. In fact, Steve Wynn even considered naming his Wynn Las Vegas resort after this famous painting.

Back in 2006 he decided to sell this painting for a whopping $135 million to Steve Cohen. This would be the most a painting had ever sold for at the time. He arranged for a few close friends and family to see the painting before it would be moved to its new owner. Steve Wynn was well known as a very expressive conversationalist using wild hand and arm gestures as he gets his point across. This is when the famous “elbow Incident” occurred.

Steve Wynn managed to accidently put his elbow right through the canvas leaving it with a 15.5 cm tear. A 15.5cm tear! He decided that this was a sign not to sell the painting. Who would pay for a painting with a huge gash through it? The painting was rendered almost worthless.

But that did not stop him from looking for a restoration artist to repair the damage and bring it back to its former glory. After spending $90 million. The painting was eventually sold to Steve Cohen in 2013 for a staggering $155 million. What an amazing story.

I believe that God uses all our pain and mistakes to our advantage and His glory. It does not matter that we have been broken. It does not matter that we have made mistakes. It does not matter that we are not perfect. God takes our brokenness and makes us whole. The experiences will not go away like the tear in the painting. If you turn it upside down it is still there but less visible. Allow God to work in us. Tear down our walls. Fix us. Then we will become even more valuable than before. The trauma we are feeling now is going to make us stronger.

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 147:3 (NIV)

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

John 13:7 (NIV)

Jesus replied, You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.

I hope this brings some inspiration into your daily life.
